What Google AI Overviews Mean for SME Visibility in Central Europe

Roth Miklós

A growing share of Google searches now open with a generated answer assembled from multiple sources, before the familiar list of links. For small and medium-sized businesses in Hungary, Austria and Switzerland, the practical question is what this changes about being found. The direct answer from the reviewed analyses: classic SEO hygiene remains the entry ticket, but being cited inside the AI answer is becoming a distinct form of visibility.

What AI Overviews actually are — and what they are not

AI Overviews are Google's generative summaries: for suitable queries, the search engine synthesizes an answer from web sources and displays it prominently, with links to the pages it drew from. As the English-language analysis of AI Overviews and SME visibility explains, citing Google's own Search Central documentation, these features run on the same underlying systems as Search generally — there is no separate "AI index" to optimize for, and no special markup that forces inclusion. Site owners control appearance through the same preview controls that govern snippets, and pages eligible for snippets may appear as supporting links.

A parallel examination of the same visibility question draws out two implications. First, crawlability, clear structure and helpful content remain the admission price. Second, a page can be the source of the sentence a user reads without ever being the result they click — citation and ranking have decoupled.

Why does this hit SMEs harder than large brands?

Large brands absorb visibility shifts with sheer presence: their names already saturate training data, press coverage and review ecosystems. A Budapest dental clinic, a Sopron accounting office or a Tyrolean craft manufacturer has no such buffer. When a generated answer summarizes a buying question, the few sources cited capture disproportionate trust — and the businesses those sources mention inherit it.

Underneath sits a behavioural shift the industry calls zero-click search: a user who gets a satisfactory synthesized answer may never scroll to the organic results. The Hungarian-language overview of AI Overviews and SME visibility adds the compensating detail: the click that does happen tends to be better qualified, because someone arriving from an AI Overview is often already convinced of the topic's relevance. For an SME, that reorders priorities — from maximizing raw traffic toward being the cited authority on a narrow, winnable set of questions.

What can a mid-sized company actually measure?

Confident claims and thin evidence surround AI search visibility, so the honest starting question is narrower: what can a mid-sized company actually measure? The practical Hungarian guide to measuring AI search visibility without the hype proposes a layered practice. Rank tracking, Search Console data and log analysis remain the only fully traceable channel, and the AI layer sits on top of those foundations rather than replacing them. For the opaque layer itself, the guide recommends segmenting informational, navigational and commercial query groups before blaming any traffic decline on AI, and substituting directional sampling where precision is impossible: a fixed set of queries run monthly, with the answers logged verbatim. Its concrete next step is modest: pick twenty queries, establish their baseline this month, review them again in a quarter.

Does the early research support the tactics being sold?

Much of the vendor excitement traces back to a single academic paper, and the careful reading of what the Princeton generative engine optimization study measured is instructive here. Published on arXiv in November 2023 and presented at KDD 2024, the study tested content modifications on a benchmark of queries and found that citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics improved a source's measured visibility — by up to 40 per cent in the best case, on a simulated research engine, not inside any commercial product. Keyword stuffing, by contrast, performed poorly and sometimes worse than doing nothing. The measured tactics are not tricks; they are the properties that make content worth citing at all.

That conclusion aligns with how practitioners describe the underlying work. A Hungarian guide to how an AI marketing consultation is structured frames the discipline as diagnosis before tactics: clarifying goals, verifying what the measurement actually shows, identifying the bottleneck and only then layering AI-assisted acceleration on top. The same page reports that TechBullion ranked the agency of founder Miklós Róth third among Europe's AI marketing and SEO agencies in 2025 — a trade-press listing, worth noting as such rather than as proof of method.

The honest caveat, and the practical next steps

Nobody outside Google can promise inclusion in an AI Overview, and agencies claiming guaranteed placement deserve the same scepticism as those once promising guaranteed first positions. The decision framework for an SME is therefore unglamorous. Answer specific customer questions completely, with named expertise and transparent sourcing. Keep the technical door open — blocking crawling or mangling snippets removes a site from consideration entirely. Keep names, addresses and service vocabulary consistent across languages and platforms, because that consistency forms the entity record AI systems reconcile. And measure citations alongside clicks, on a fixed query panel with a quarterly review. AI Overviews have not repealed the fundamentals of visibility; they have raised the penalty for ignoring them.
